Prairie Dog: Cuddly Pet or Trojan Horse?

چکیده
cles analyze tularemia outbreaks, and one examines the pathologic features of monkeypox in commercially traded prairie dogs. While the prairie dog–associated tularemia outbreak and the first U.S. monkeypox outbreak highlight health risks to humans of the unregulated trade of wildcaught animals, they also raise broader issues. Exotic animal import and export have altered the composition of native fauna and flora throughout the world and have been associated with disease outbreaks. In addition, translocation of animals in some circumstances has provided the opportunity for pathogens to jump species and become established in native animal populations. Examples abound of intentionally or accidentally imported exotic species introducing new pathogens (e.g., rats introducing Yersinia pestis, the etiologic agent of plague, to the western United States) and allowing them to become established in native animal populations. Avashia et al. (1) and Petersen et al. (2), analyzing the tularemia outbreak in commercially traded prairie dogs, underscore the difficulty of identifying existing infection in wild-caught animals, particularly by commercial collectors and distributors who trap prairie dogs from diseaseendemic foci. The outbreak was predictable, considering the conditions in which the animals were kept. In retrospect, the prairie dog–associated monkeypox outbreak highlights the speed with which exotic rodent species, transported worldwide, allow virulent pathogens to jump species and be transmitted to humans. Often, infection with these pathogens is fatal for recipient animals, as is the case in prairie dogs infected with Y. pestis or Francisella tularensis (the etiologic agent of tularemia). The infected animals can also become “silent” carriers and serve as a new reservoir for the introduced pathogen. The overall outcome of a pathogen’s jumping species often remains unpredictable. Guarner et al. (3) investigated the pathologic features of monkeypox in prairie dogs to identify the route of viral transmission to humans. They found that viral transmission could occur through both respiratory

Role-based Security
User role-based protection presents a exible (hence adaptive) means for enforcing diering ranges of security policies. It can emulate both mandatory and discretionary access control modes of protection. Role-based protection enforces the principle of least privilege, hence minimizing the risk of Trojan horse attacks. This paper oers a glimpse into the strengths (and some weaknesses) of role-bas...

Many people believe that language teaching is a neutral practice. However, this belief is not without its own opponents. To many scholars, teaching languages cannot be devoid of teaching cultural values of the target language, which tacitly aims at denigrating cultural values of the community of the learners who are learning it. The ultimate purpose of such cultural oppression, according to the...
متن کاملOccupational Risks during a Monkeypox Outbreak, Wisconsin, 2003
We determined factors associated with occupational transmission in Wisconsin during the 2003 outbreak of prairie dog--associated monkeypox virus infections. Our investigation included active contact surveillance, exposure-related interviews, and a veterinary facility cohort study. We identified 19 confirmed, 5 probable, and 3 suspected cases. Rash, headache, sweats, and fever were reported by >...

It is pointed out that the Trojan-Horse method is a suitable tool to investigate subthreshold resonances. TRANSFER REACTIONS AND TROJAN HORSE METHOD A similarity between cross sections for two-body and closely related three-body reactions under certain kinematical conditions [1] led to the introduction of the Trojan-Horse method [2, 3, 4]. In this indirect approach a two-body reaction
متن کاملThe detection of monkeypox in humans in the Western Hemisphere.
BACKGROUND During May and June 2003, an outbreak of febrile illness with vesiculopustular eruptions occurred among persons in the midwestern United States who had had contact with ill pet prairie dogs obtained through a common distributor. Zoonotic transmission of a bacterial or viral pathogen was suspected. METHODS We reviewed medical records, conducted interviews and examinations, and colle...
